Discover Your Calling

Some books begin by making the content sound like the single most important topic of all time. This book begins with a refreshing sense of perspective: ”there is no specific command in the bible to discover one’s calling.” But if we do have a ‘unique’ calling, it would make sense that we grow in our understanding of that calling. That is the beauty of this book. The author not only draws on his own personal experience, and the experiences of other pilgrims, but also breaks down vocational discovery into manageable moments of reflection.

“For many, the first step is to come to the realisation that we each have our unique roles to play in God’s purposes” — Soo-Inn Tan

The main portion of the book covers the ABC of vocational discernment: A—Abilities B—Burdens C—Critical Life Incidents. Each section is grounded in scripture, and includes recommendations for personal reflection (solitude) and communal guidance (counsel) — the two spiritual disciplines seen as fundamental to the discernment process. Whether you are reformed, charismatic, or somewhere in between, this book is an agreeable resource.

“A call is an inner desire given by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God and confirmed by the community of Christ” — Soo-Inn Tan

One message repeated throughout the book is God’s ability to call men and women into every sector of society, and not just the church. Whatever sphere you feel called to—whether business, education, or the arts—this book avoids leaving you feeling your vocation is second-rate and provides a helpful framework for discovering more about who you are.
