A Baby Destined for Rejection

The news of a Saviour was announced to the shepherds and there was an outburst of praise: “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13–14).

But there’s a problem.

The ‘peace’ the angels sing about, is only available to those ‘with whom God is pleased’.

Each time we reject God, it causes Him displeasure. Each of us stands condemned before a holy God.

Yet this is the reason for the angels’ song. This is the reason for Jesus’ arrival on earth.

If Jesus was not rejected, we would continue to be rejected. We would stand before the entrance to heaven, knock on the door, and hear the words: ‘there is no room in the inn.

Thankfully Jesus did endure rejection so that we wouldn’t have to.

Jesus —

  • who was despised, denied, abandoned, betrayed, and crucified on the cross.

  • who willingly took our place and endured the rejection we should experience.

  • who suffered as a criminal and became a curse for the cursed.

Jesus’ rejection became our good news.

Through the cross, the bitter taste of our rejection turns into a sweet sense of God’s acceptance. We see the depth of our own inadequacies, and the Spirit shows us the depth of Jesus’ love.

The depth of our sinfulness is deep.
But the depth of God’s grace is deeper.

As this truth penetrates our heart — it floods our soul with hope. Now we have a reason to sing as the angels sang: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (v.14).

God’s pleasure over us isn’t dependent upon us.
Jesus’ performance is sufficient!
