Context

1. Pay attention to the surrounding verses, paragraphs, chapters, events, etc. to see how this passage fits within the context of this particular book of the Bible.

2. Note how this passage fits within the larger storyline of the whole Bible, i.e. how God is saving a people through Jesus Christ to live under his rule in his place.

Observation and Meaning

1. Make careful observations of the biblical text. Notice details such as linking words (eg. “for”, “if”, “therefore”), repetition, dialogue, narrative, and Old Testament quotations.

2. To understand the meaning of the biblical text, we need to discern the author’s purpose or intent: Why is the biblical author writing this?

3. Helpful questions to ask include:

• Who is writing and to whom?

• What is the situation of the author and of the readers?

• Are we made aware of any problems that need to be addressed?

• Are there any repeated themes, or a single idea that holds everything together?

Application

1. Apply God’s word to the heart. Move beyond merely addressing circumstances and behaviours by asking good “heart” questions. For example: Why do we do what we do? What do we really desire?

2. Always connect the gospel to application. For example, what difference does knowing Christ make to our obedience to God?

3. Ask what the passage teaches us about God, ourselves, salvation in Christ, the church, the world, etc.

文脈

1. 周囲の節、段落、章、出来事などに注意を払い、読んでい る箇所が、聖書の中の特定の書物の文脈にどのように当て はまるかを確認してください。

2. この箇所が聖書全体の大きなストーリーにどのように当て はまるのか、つまり、 神がイエス・キリストを通してどの ように人々を救い、神の御国でご自身の支配のもとに生き ていくようにしたか、に注目してください。

観察と意味

1. 聖書本文を注意深く観察しましょう。接続ワード(例: 「~ なので」 「もし」「ですから」など)、繰り返し、対話、 物語、旧約聖書の引用などの詳細に目を留めましょう。

2. 聖書本文の意味を理解するためには、著者の目的や意図 (聖書の著者はなぜこれを書いているのか?)を見極める 必要があります。

3. 手助けとなる質問の例:

• 誰が、誰に向けて書いていますか?

• 著者と読者の状況はどうでしたか?

• 取り組むべき問題があり、そちらへ目を向けるようにと促されていますか?

• 繰り返されるテーマや、すべてをまとめている一つの主題はありますか?

適用

1. 神のことばを心に適用しましょう。「心」に関する良い質 問をすることで、単に状況や行動に対処することの先へと 進みましょう。例えば、「なぜ私たちはこうするのでしょ うか?」「私たちは本当のところ何を望んでいるのでしょ うか?」

2. 常に福音を適用に結びつけましょう。例えば、「キリスト を知っていることは、私たちの神への従順にどのような違 いをもたらすのでしょうか?」

3. 神、私たち自身、キリストにある救い、教会、世界などに ついて、その箇所が私たちに何を教えているのかを尋ねてみ ましょう。
